» Note from Ray
January 2015 marked 25 years for me as University Librarian at the University of Adelaide and this will be my last significant anniversary as I have decided to retire later this year. However, my tenure doesn’t even come close to matching that of previous University of Adelaide Librarians, Robert Clucas (30 years) and Bill Cowan (31 years).
It has been a privilege to have held this position at one of the best research university libraries in Australia.
During my time here, the University Libraries have evolved from being print based to increasingly digital. However the Barr Smith Library print collection continues to be an important research resource and its breadth and depth provides important resources for research at all levels and in most disciplines.
To be involved with these major changes in the Library, its collections, and the provision of access for the University community has been both challenging and rewarding. With the loyalty of staff, donors and the extended University community it has been possible to accomplish significant change.
Alumni, Friends of the Library and our committed supporters have played a very important role. Generous contributions over the past 15 years of annual appeals have provided the Library with funds to acquire additional and often unique research materials. This supports the provision of scholarly resources for the University community, from undergraduate and higher degree students to research and teaching staff. I find it especially pleasing that so many alumni and friends are also users of our collections. I wish to thank you all for this ongoing and very important support.
As I work towards my retirement later this year, I encourage you to continue the tradition of support for the Barr Smith Library and ensure its collections remain up-to-date by donating to my last appeal as University Librarian at the University of Adelaide.

The impact of donations
Since its inception in 2002 the Barr Smith Library Appeal has raised nearly $1.2 million in donations and added more than 25,000 titles, including eBooks, to the collections. The generous response from our donors is growing each year, helping us to provide the best learning and research material to our students, staff and the community.
25 years of giving
In his 25 years as University Librarian, Ray Choate has donated more than 5,000 volumes from his personal collection to the Barr Smith Library. He is also grateful for all the donations and bequests received in support of the Library during this time.
