|The University of Adelaide Wine Club was founded in 1992 to provide students, staff and alumni of the University of Adelaide with a social and educational forum for wine appreciation.
The club is a not-for-profit organisation funded by memberships, events, grants from the Clubs Association, and importantly, though industry participation and donations. Members are largely students, staff and graduates from the wine and horticulture related programs within the School of Agriculture, Food &Wine, however students or alumni from all disciplines are all encouraged to join. The club is completely student run and is based at the Waite Campus.
Tastings and events are held regularly throughout the year, both social and more formal in nature. Already this year the club has been fortunate enough to enjoy a structured tasting of Italian wines and their Australian counterpart styles with Jimmy Day of Bottega Rotolo. Past highlights of the club’s annual master class have included a fantastic tasting by Dean Hewitson and his styles of Mourvedre and an amazing vertical tasting of 12 Rockford Vine Vale Rieslings kindly donated from the personal cellar of Rachel Duncan. The annual End of Year Dinner is a night of great food accompanied by wines from the club’s small cellar.
The club does rely on the support and participation of the industry to pull together tastings. With so many graduates in the industry, many are happy to donate time or wine to the club and are encouraging and supportive. The Wine Club committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all industry members for their dedication and involvement. Our thanks also extend to the School’s staff, with special mention to Steve Clarke and Dr Paul Grbin, for their continuing support. Many thanks go to the Edinburgh Cellars Mitcham, the Exeter Hotel and the Gilbert Street Hotel, who provide the club with fantastic venues to host events.
