    Barr Smith Discovery Series

The Barr Smith Discovery Series is an occasional one hour lunch time series offering first hand accounts of discoveries in the Barr Smith Library and the use of the collections for research. The series is free and open to all. The inaugural occasion was with Jean Fornasiero and John West-Sooby speaking on Reading Baudin's Books, 'Rediscovering a Discoverer'.

  Adoptabook - a Friends' initiative

The Barr Smith library holds many early printed and rare books collected largely through generous donation. This is a working collection and these unique and valuable resources support and stimulate the University’s extensive and varied teaching and research programmes. Many of these items, now housed in Rare Books and Special Collections, are in need of repair and restoration to ensure the works are available for the continued benefit of future generations of scholars.

There is a wide range of titles in need of restoration and information about them and the Adoptabook Scheme can be found on the webpage:
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/library/special/adopt_a_book/.

Australian Federation of Friends of Museums (AFFM)

A benefit of your Friends membership is associated membership of the AFFM and the WFFM (World Federation of Friends of Museums).
This is a national, non-profit organisation representing museum supporters throughout Australia. Members include groups and individuals who support art galleries, museums, botanic gardens, libraries, zoos, archives and historic sites around the country.

The AFFM has a new website www.ausffm.org.au and Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ausffm. The WFFM is at www.museumfriends.com with 36 countries participating. These sites can be searched for the extensive list of members throughout the country and the benefits of membership, especially if you are planning to travel interstate or overseas.

Members can show their card to request reciprocal benefits such as use of the members’ lounge and/or discounts at the book and coffee shops. Reciprocal membership benefits will vary and are offered only to members travelling outside their place of residence. Free or reduced admission to museums or special exhibitions is not generally a benefit of AFFM membership.
