Allayne Webster [current staff member]

For Faculty of Professions staff member Allayne Webster, her secret has been her love of writing. But it's not a secret any more - Mrs Webster has now released her first novel to critical acclaim.

The novel, Our Little Secret, is a story about sexual abuse. Rape, small-town gossip, scandal, guilt and repression are all explored in a novel that is described as "a book every young girl needs to read". It is aimed at addressing real issues for mature teenage readers. Our Little Secret has already gained much attention in legal and political circles, and was launched by independent No Pokies MLC Nick Xenophon. It received positive reviews in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Advertiser, and Mrs Webster has also been interviewed by Amanda Blair on radio FIVEaa.

Our Little Secret is published by Omnibus, Scholastic, and is available at all good bookstores at a recommended retail price of $17.99.

Alastair Wood [B Ec 1972]

Alastair Wood was born in Adelaide, South Australia. After leaving school he spent a year in Canada where he tramped the Rockies of British Columbia fishing for the magnificent steelhead trout. On his return to Australia he attended The University of Adelaide and graduated in Economics.

In 1970 he purchased a marine scale fishing licence and fished for mulloway in the surf along Younghusband Peninsula. In 1976 he was featured in an episode of the ABC’s ‘Big Country’ and in the 1990s was involved in an aquaculture program that pioneered the breeding of mulloway in captivity.

In his book titled Of Billabongs and Broken Dreams, Alastair presents a series of short stories that contrast the abundance, beauty and drama of the old river with the present. It foretells a grim picture that might yet be tempered. The book retails for $29.00 and is available to purchase from the following outlets; Angus & Robertson, Norwood; Lindsay Allen Chemist, Burnside Village; Chemmart Extra, Goolwa; ChemPlus, Victor Central; Causeway Kiosk, Victor Harbor or from Alastair Wood.

Lorraine McLoughlin (nee Penny) [BA (1968), Grad Dip Ed Admin (1980) Grad Dip CW (2004)]

Lorraine was born in country South Australia in 1946 and educated at the University of Adelaide majoring in English and Geography and doing post graduate work in Educational Administration and Creative Writing.

After a career as a teacher, political apparatchik and bureaucrat, she has worked in her regional community to develop the arts. In particular she was the inaugural Artistic Director of the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival in the Yankalilla district south of Adelaide. At the second festival she also curated a retrospective exhibition of Barbara Robertson’s paintings and fell in love with the artist as well as her work.

Thus the idea of a book was born and she has spent hours interviewing Barbara, her friends, former colleagues and fellow artists, and family members.

Barbara Robertson: An Australian artist's life can be ordered online from www.robertsonbiography.com for $49.50 plus postage and handling.
