SUMMARY:Free Public Lecture: The Higgs boson
DESCRIPTION: Free Public Lecture: The Higgs boson Tuesday 24 July 2012 It's been described as the most exciting discovery in particle physics in almost 30 years. This month, a University of Adelaide scientist will give a free public lecture about the Higgs boson, the new subatomic particle that has been discovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Switzerland. Dr Paul Jackson is involved in researching new particles at the LHC. Dr Jackson is a lecturer in high-energy particle physics at the University of Adelaide's School of Chemistry & Physics. He is a team leader of the Adelaide group for the ATLAS experiment (one of seven different particle detector experiments at the LHC). He is also a key member of the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence in Particle Physics at the Terascale. Dr Jackson will discuss the discovery of this new particle, why it's important, and the huge international teams that have been working to find it. Presented by the Australian Institute of Physics SA branch, Dr Jackson's lecture will be followed by a Q&A session. A panel of experts will be available to answer questions about the discovery of the Higgs boson and what it means for the Universe as we know it. Event Details Date: Tuesday 24 July 2013 Time: 7:00pm Venue: Kent Grant Lecture Theatre, Physics Building North Terrace Campus, University of Adelaide Cost: FREE - all welcome Media Contacts: Dr Paul Jackson Lecturer, School of Chemistry and Physics Chief Investigator, ARC Centre of Excellence The University of Adelaide P: 08 8313 0269 E: p.jackson@adelaide.edu.au David Ellis Media and Comunications Officer The University of Adelaide E: david.ellis@adelaide.edu.au Download Flyer (pdf)
